Train tears through truck carrying mail in Somerset

SOMERSET, Pa. (AP) —

Authorities say a cargo train tore through a tractor-trailer carrying bulk mail at a western Pennsylvania railroad crossing, scattering thousands of pieces of bulk mail.

Nobody was hurt in the collision in Somerset after police say the truck driver tried to cross ahead of the oncoming train.

A United States Postal Service spokesman says the mail wasn't technically in USPS custody at the time of the crash but en route for processing after being hired by a mailing house.

Postal Service officials responded to the scene to help gather and sort the scattered correspondence consisting mostly of catalogs and advertising.

State police say the truck driver faces numerous traffic violations.
