A Troy Hill man was sentenced to nine to 23 months in jail for beating his German shepherd to death in January.
Police said Darwin Jones beat his 5-year-old dog to death in public on January 10. According to court documents, Jones “savagely beat the dog in the head and body with a 6 foot pry bar.”
Neighbors who witnessed the attack said Jones then used the sharp end of the pry bar to skewer the dog through the rib cage.
The veterinarian who conducted a necropsy on the dog said, “This was without doubt an excruciating, painful, inhumane, suffering way to death.”
Jones denied beating the dog, despite a neighbor who witnessed the attack. Jones later told investigators that he wanted the dog dead because he thought it was poisoned and “wanted to put it out of its misery.”
Jones was sentenced Monday to nine to 23 months in the Allegheny County Jail and one year probation. The judge ordered Jones to jail in 30 days, provided he give up his other dog.
The Allegheny County District Attorney’s office said Jones’ wife refused to give up the dog to humane officers. The judge reconvened in the case and ordered Jones to begin serving his sentence immediately.
