Police: Man just released from jail steals car, leads officers on high-speed chase

PITTSBURGH —

A police chase that began in West Mifflin when a car was stolen from a gas station ended when the driver crashed into a telephone pole in a Pittsburgh neighborhood Thursday afternoon.

The incident happened around 1 p.m. and eventually ended on Interboro Avenue in the city of Pittsburgh.

“I said, ‘I think the car is leaving,’” gas station manager Nicole Radokovic said. “Then we ran out the door and called police.”

Police said the suspect, Michael Widmaier, had just been released from jail on bond by a local magistrate minutes before the chase began.

“We saw police with their guns drawn yelling, ‘Get out of the car. Get out of the car,’” witness Suzy Mac said.

Widmaier was taken to UPMC Mercy Hospital for treatment. His condition has not been released.

Officials said he’s facing numerous charges.
