Woman accused of stealing $5K in merchandise from Ross Park Mall

ROSS TOWNSHIP, Pa. —

A woman was arrested Sunday afternoon after police said she stole thousands of dollars worth of clothes and purses from Ross Park Mall.

According to police, Kate Spiker, 36, stole about $5,000 worth of merchandise from Nordstrom about 3 p.m. Police said she made several trips in and out of the store.

Investigators said Spiker forced her 14-year-old daughter to drive their getaway car. Police officers caught them nearby a short time later on McKnight Road.

“Apparently she told her daughter prior to going to the mall that this wasn’t hurting anyone, that Nordstrom is the victim,” Ross Township Police Sgt. Benjamin Dripps said. "It's a common excuse that 'We're not taking out of anyone's pocket or out of anyone's home. It's just a big department store.'"

Spiker is facing three felony theft charges and one misdemeanor charge of corruption of minors.

She was unable to post $25,000 bond and is being held at the Allegheny County Jail.

“It’s shocking because most parents educate their children on how to avoid trouble and how to be a respectable person in society. It’s shocking that this person would go to the length to not only not do that, but make their 14-year-old complicit in their crime,” Dripps said.

The daughter was released into the custody of her father.
