ORLANDO, Fla. —
George Zimmerman's defense team said Wednesday they have received Trayvon Martin’s school records.
Zimmerman is accused of shooting and killing Martin in Sanford in February. He has maintained his innocence and claimed the shooting was in self-defense.
Through a posting on the defense team's website, Zimmerman's lawyer said the information in the file could lead to other evidence that could help Zimmerman prove his case.
But the defense team promised not to use the school records to smear Martin's reputation, and they said they wouldn’t post the records publicly.
In the meantime, Martin’s mother and Democratic lawmakers are calling for the repeal of the so-called "stand your ground" law.
Sybrina Fulton joined Rep. Alan Williams and Sen. Dwight Bullard on Wednesday in calling for a repeal of the law that says people can use deadly force if they feel threatened.
Zimmerman is charged with second-degree murder and is using stand your ground as his defense.
Williams filed a bill (HB 4009) that would seek the repeal. It is likely to face opposition from Republicans who control the Legislature and backed the current law.
A panel created by Gov. Rick Scott has recommended no major changes.
