Carbon Dioxide Cartridge Explodes

WESTMORELAND, Pa. —

A Westmoreland County man is still in the hospital after he tried to make his own fireworks at home.

Police said 20-year-old Michael Stasenko was trying to build a firework in his Washington Township basement.

While he was drilling it, a carbon dioxide cartridge exploded.

Friends at the scene said metal shrapnel became lodged in Stasenko's stomach.

Stasenko was transported to Allegheny General Hospital.

He was operated on for a collapsed lung and internal bleeding.

He was last listed in serious condition.
