McCain Details Energy Independence Plan

LAS VEGAS —

While Sen. Barack Obama campaigns in Pittsburgh, Sen. John McCain is focusing on energy independence in his run for the White house.

The presumptive Republican nominee’s goal is for the United States to be energy independent by 2025.

McCain says his “Lexington Project” would expand domestic oil production, provide funding for clean coal research, and build new nuclear power plants.

"The experience of nations across Europe and Asia has shown that nuclear energy is efficient. It is safe, it is proven, and it is essential to America's energy future," McCain said during a speech Wednesday in Las Vegas.

He also wants to offer a $300 million prize to anyone who can develop a powerful car battery.

McCain says energy independence will also strengthen national security.

The Lexington Project is named after the Revolutionary War site where America first fought for independence.

McCain is scheduled to make campaign stops in Ohio and Michigan on Thursday.
