McGuffey Teachers Set To Strike

Teachers in the McGuffey School District announced Tuesday that they will go on strike this month.

The McGuffey Education Association's 165 teachers said the district-wide strike will begin March 22.

The association's members voted to approve a strike authorization at a meeting held Monday.

"This is the last thing that we want to do, but the school board has left us with no other options," said association spokesperson Andrew MacBeth, a high school English teacher. "We have said 'Yes' to a fair, affordable contract - and the school board has said 'No.' Even though we have compromised - again and again - the school board has refused to do the same."

According to MacBeth, the association has participated in more than a dozen negotiating sessions over the past year.

The school board was not immediately available for comment.
