MDX (NEW FOR 2007!)

Impressions: Using a platform that's 20-percent stiffer than that of previous model and a high-tech Swiss-built speed boat for stylistic inspiration, the new seven-passenger 2007 MDX is a loaded-up expression of what Honda's upscale division is all about: driving precision. Now boasting a 300-horsepower 3.7-liter V6 mated to a five-speed automatic transmission, and a chassis that was tuned to a fine edge on Germany's famed Nurburgring race circuit, the new MDX can also tow 5,000 pounds of yuppie gear. The unique "Super Handing" all-wheel-drive system borrows a page from the RL luxury sedan in that it can vary the torque split, not just between the front and rear wheels, but between the left and right rear wheels. As well, in a turn, power is applied to the outer rear wheel (up to 100 percent) to help the MDX corner better in such situations as entering freeway on-ramps. Standard features include plenty o' airbags (and rollover deployment), "trailer stability assist" to help out when you're towing, xenon headlights, power moonroof, 18-inch alloy wheels, leather seating, tri-zone climate control (left, right and rear), power tilt and telescoping steering wheel and eight-speaker audio system. Of the three option groupings, the Technology package has the wildest gizmos. Highlights include navigation, voice recognition, back-up camera, AcuraLink satellite communication (with real-time get-out-of-this-traffic-jam advice) and, amazingly, the ability to cool the occupants receiving direct sunlight. The latter use satellites to calculate the MDX's relative position to the sun. The Tech package also includes a fantastic surround-sound audio system. Among its many features, the Sport package (which includes the Tech package) has shock absorbers filled with what amounts to liquid metal, the viscosity of which can be changed by varying the electric current flowing through them. The Entertainment package includes heated second-row seats, remote power-operated liftgate and a rear DVD entertainment system. Neat stuff. The downside? The MDX uses premium fuel.
