New Riverfront Housing, Commercial Development Planned For Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH —

New housing, commercial properties and recreational areas are being planned for Pittsburgh as part of a new riverfront development stretching from the Strip District to Highland Park.

Mayor Luke Ravenstahl on Tuesday announced a partnership between the Urban Redevelopment Authority and the Buncher Co. to develop three major sites totaling 80 acres along the banks of the Allegheny River.

The Buncher Group owns acreage in the Strip District to Highland Park. The URA owns the historic Produce Terminal on Smallman Street and a 22-acre tract at 62nd Street.

The plan includes riverfront trails, a possible entertainment venue and housing in Lawrenceville, officials said.

“We'll find a way to make sure that we use the history and the existing businesses in the Produce Terminal to make the Strip District even bigger and better,” Ravenstahl said.

Pending URA approval, construction could begin later this year.
