Newborn Baby Found Wrapped In Windbreaker On Stairs

Child Suffered No Visible Injuries

MERCER COUNTY, Pa. —

A newborn baby was found abandoned on the steps of a local home in Mercer County.

At first, people in the neighborhood thought the cries were coming from an animal. But they soon realized it was a baby left all alone.

Police said a baby girl wrapped in a windbreaker was left abandoned on steps at a house along Sharon Street Wednesday. The baby’s umbilical cord was still attached.

Linda Mims said she still can’t believe what she found on her hallway steps. Mims, a grandmother of three, cared for the child until police arrived at the scene.

Baby Jane Doe weighed about 6 pounds and suffered no visible injuries. She remains under a doctor’s care.

Police continue to search for who abandoned the child. If you have any information in this case, you are asked to call police.

Pennsylvania is one of 48 states with a "Safe Haven" law. Parents may turn over unwanted newborns up to 28 days old to any hospital. The parents will not be asked any questions as long as the child is unharmed.

The hospital may ask you for health information to help the baby in the future. But you do not have to leave this information, or you can choose to fill out a form and mail it in later.
