PITTSBURGH —

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said Monday that he plans to meet with Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger about the star's off-field problems.

Goodell already has spoken with team owners about Roethlisberger, who is accused of assaulting a 20-year-old college student in a Georgia nightclub earlier this month.

Roethlisberger's attorneys have said the quarterback committed no crime.

Goodell said the league "takes this issue very seriously," and that he is "concerned that Ben continues to put himself in this position."

Roethlisberger, 28, has not been charged in the March 5 incident. However, if charges are filed, he could be subject to league discipline.

Roethlisberger's Attorney, David Cornwell, e-mailed a statement to Channel 11 News Monday night. "I contacted the League as soon as the recent allegations were made against Ben. We agreed that I would keep the NFL apprised of all developments as they warrant. I believe the Commissioner will allow us to focus on matters in Georgia, but we look forward to meeting with him and addressing any concerns he may have," said Cornwell.

Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin spoke publicly for the first time this weekend about the accusations against Roethlisberger.

"I'm highly concerned for our franchise and for Ben, personally," Tomlin told the NFL Network. "My concerns are many, but I think at this time, it's kind of appropriate to watch these things and let these things run their course."

Roethlisberger is also the subject of a civil suit that is still pending in Nevada. The suit alleges that Roethlisberger sexually assaulted a woman in July of 2007 at a Lake Tahoe resort.
