North Shore Connector Project Breaks Through

PITTSBURGH —

There is now an official tunnel under the Allegheny River.

A tunnel boring machine broke through into a downtown Pittsburgh "receiving pit" around 8 p.m. Thursday.

This North Shore Connector milestone was delayed roughly 12-hours after a bearing broke on the 500-ton tunnel machine about 6-feet from the receiving pit under Stanwix Street.

Crews fixed the problem, and the boring machine continued digging.

Drilling is expected to resume Friday morning, with the machine digging back to the North Shore.
