NRA Sues Pittsburgh Over Gun Reporting Law

The National Rifle Association sued Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl and city council Friday over the legality of a city law requiring gun owners to report their lost or stolen guns.

The NRA said that the law "severely restricts and/or infringes" on citizens' constitutional right to keep firearms in their homes. The NRA and four individuals also argue in the suit that the city doesn't have the authority to regulate the ownership of firearms.

The lawsuit was filed in Allegheny County Common Pleas Court. It names as defendants Ravenstahl and the Pittsburgh City Council. The law was approved by council in December and passed into law 10 days later without Ravenstahl's signature.

"I'm not surprised. When I didn't sign the bill that's exactly why I didn't sign it. It was clear to me through the advice of our solicitor that it was an unenforceable ordinance at the local level and that State law prevented us to do so. I predicted that his day would come and in this case it's the NRA," Ravenstahl said.

Ravenstahl told Channel 11 News that he'll consult with the city solicitor to figure out the best way to proceed.
