A Pittsburgh police officer under investigation by a federal grand jury in the alleged beating of a CAPA student now faces new accusations of using excessive force.
“His eyeball was knocked out of his eye socket. The doctor had to insert a plastic screw in order for the eyeball not to fall into his eye socket,” said attorney Jenee Oliver.
Oliver was referring to Jamil Gray, 34, who was arrested in Feb. 2009.
Oliver claims officer Michael Saldutte delivered a brutal beating during an arrest that started out as a traffic stop.
Channel 11 obtained medical reports from the Allegheny County Jail. Gray had a large left floor fracture, which means a large left eye fracture. He had surgery, but the injury has left permanent damage.
“He still needs care. He sees a doctor routinely,” said Oliver.
What concerns Oliver is that Saldutte is one of three officers under investigation by a federal grand jury on accusations of using excessive force against CAPA student Jordan Miles.
“It seems that there is a problem in the Homewood area with these officers. I would like some accountability for all of these injuries that are occurring with the same officers,” said Oliver.
Gray was convicted on multiple drug charges. He is currently serving time at Pittsburgh’s state prison in Woods Run.
Oliver said in addition to a lawsuit for monetary damages, she plans to petition the U.S. Attorney General to commence an official civil rights investigation.
A call to the FOP has not been returned.
Miles said Saldutte and two other officers beat him on a Homewood street earlier this year.
The officers said Miles ran from them and resisted arrest.
Charges were dropped against Miles, and the officers are on paid administrative leave.
