MORGANTOWN, W.Va. —
Channel 11 found a Web site linking Pitt student 18-year-old Justin Hayduk who drowned in Morgantown, West Virginia to what out of state retired detectives said are "smiley face" killers. Not all the information surrounding the connection is credible.
The two retired New York detectives believe the drowning deaths of at least 40 college aged men in several Midwestern states were not tragic accidents. They call them "smiley face" murders because they say the killers left behind spray painted smiley faces where each victim went into the water.
While a Web site links the drowning death of Hayduk to the "smiley face" murder investigation, Justin's cause of death still stands as an accidental drowning. Channel 11 spoke with Justin's father on Tuesday night, and he said Justin's death is not connected to the "smiley face" murders.
