Pittsburgh Police Apologize For Issuing Bad Speeding Tickets

PITTSBURGH —

Hundreds of people in Pittsburgh will have their speeding tickets voided.

That’s because police admit to using a device they were not permitted to use.

It’s called Lidar, and Pittsburgh police were supposed to use it in conjunction with other devices. But more than 500 tickets were written with Lidar as the only device used.

Pittsburgh police have a number of steps you should follow if you have received a Lidar citation.

Anyone who received a citation with the word "Lidar" on it should follow the instructions on the back to request a hearing in city traffic court where the charges will be dismissed.

If you have already paid a Lidar citation, send a copy of the citation to the Chief of Police's office.

It will be forwarded with a letter to traffic court for a full refund.

If you have points on your license because of a Lidar citation, you should also send in proof of the citation to the chief's office.

A letter will be attached and forwarded to your insurance company for consideration.
