Pittsburgh's Bishop Zubik Recovering From Back Surgery

PITTSBURGH —

Pittsburgh Bishop David Zubik is recovering from surgery on his back for the second time in less than a year.

The Catholic bishop had the surgery Thursday morning at UPMC Mercy Hospital. He had a herniated disk repaired last April, but the diocese described this as a new occurrence.

"Everything was successful. The surgeon was pleased that they did this procedure because it enabled them to do some things they didn't do before. This is a new occurrence and he said he's going to be very fine in the future and the pain in his leg will be relieved," said Father Ron Lengwin of the Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh.

The same surgical team that conducted the first surgery performed the second. Zubick has been advised to take off the rest of January to ensure a full recovery.
