Police Accused In CAPA Student's Beating Pass Polygraph

PITTSBURGH —

Three Pittsburgh police officers accused of beating a Homewood teenager during a January arrest near his home passed polygraph tests over the weekend, the president of the police union said.

According to Channel 11's news exchange partners at TribLive, officers David Sisak, Richard Ewing and Michael Saldutte took the tests from a private polygraph administrator at the same time that nearly 100 other city officers marched in the St. Patrick's Day Parade downtown on Saturday.

“I don’t care what they passed, we know they will not pass the community’s lie detector test,” said Tim Stevens, chairman of Black Political Empowerment in Pittsburgh. “Jordan Miles did not beat himself. He did not pull his hair out of his own head.”

Stevens also objected to police officers marching in the parade wearing T-shirts in support of the accused officers, who are on paid administrative leave while the city and FBI investigate the Jan. 12 incident.

But Ewing’s attorney, Bob Del Greco, said the officers were asked the right questions in the polygraph test and all passed.

“The implication was these police officers were just out there and beat up this fellow without any reason of pursuit, without suspicion he was involved in criminal activity,” Del Greco said.

“And I think the word ‘vindication’ is a good one in terms, at a minimum, this polygraph establishes, in my mind, they were out doing their duty and followed protocol … and were acting in the confines of which you would expect of a police officer,” Del Greco said.

Jordan Miles, 18, an honors student at the Creative and Performing Arts High School, said the officers beat him during the arrest. According to his attorney, Miles passed an FBI polygraph test last month.

Earlier this month, a judge dismissed the charges against Miles after a homeowner contradicted police accounts that Miles lurked near a stranger's house. The homeowner said she knows Miles, who is friends with her son.
