Police: Driver Reaching For Pizza Causes I-79 Accident

Charges Filed Against Driver

SOUTH STRABANE TOWNSHIP, Pa. —

A van driver was taken to a Pittsburgh hospital following a crash with a tanker truck in South Strabane Township, Washington County, on Thursday.

Investigators said John A. Symcheck, 35, was exiting Interstate 79 and took his eyes off the road to reach for a piece of pizza on the front seat.

That's when he crashed into a tractor trailer that was legally parked on the shoulder of the exit ramp, police said.

Symcheck had to be extricated from his vehicle, authorities said. He was conscious and was flown by helicopter to Allegheny General Hospital with major injuries. There is no word on his condition.

Police cited him with careless driving and not wearing a seat belt.
