SOUTH FAYETTE TOWNSHIP, Pa. —
The break happened at about 3:30 a.m. Thursday in South Fayette Township, along Boyce Road, causing a hillside there to crumble.
The roadway reopened Sunday evening.
Work crews said a 36-inch water main ruptured, opening a hole in the ground and flooding a roadway.
At one point, an ambulance had to turn around, unable to make it through the water.
The road closure prompted the South Fayette district to cancel classes.
Authorities detoured traffic onto Mayview Road around the break.
“The damage is done,” said nearby homeowner Bruce Graham. “Rocks and cement flew all over our property. I don't know where it picked it up, but it was one powerful wave of water.”
Pennsylvanian American Water Company said about a dozen customers were without water service.
