Pregnant Aerobics Instructor Shot At Gym Talks To WPXI

COLLIER TOWNSHIP, Pa. —

A pregnant aerobics instructor who was shot Tuesday night after a gunman opened fire, killing three women and then himself at LA Fitness in Collier Township, spoke to Channel 11 News on Wednesday.

Channel 11 News will air an additional news report at 7 p.m. today. Tune in for this special report.

George Sodini, 48, of Scott Township, is accused of killing Elizabeth Gannon, of Greentree, Heidi Overmier, 46, and Jody Billingsley at the LA Fitness health club. Nine other women were injured in the shooting.

Mary Primis was teaching the aerobics class Tuesday night when the gunman barged into the classroom.

Primis, 26, told Channel 11 News that it was her last class, because she is 10 weeks pregnant.

Primas said she had just started the class when the tragedy began.

"About eight to ten minutes into it I saw a gentleman come into the back, carrying a large gym bag, which is not unusual, people come in sometimes to get equipment so I didn't think anything of it," she said. "And then the lights went out which happens occassionally so we turn around to go turn them back on and that's when I heard bullets."

"When I was on the floor, I felt the first bullet on my left shoulder and then about 30 seconds later I felt the second in my back. I remember thinking I wanted to hold my breath because if he saw that I was breathing he would shoot again," Primas said.

Primas said the bullet is still lodged in her back, near her lungs. The baby is doing fine, doctors said.

"My heart breaks for the people who weren't so fortunate," Primas said.

Allegheny County police Superintendent Charles Moffatt said police recovered four guns from Sodini's body and found a note inside his duffel bag. Police said he used three of the guns -- two 9mm handguns with extended clips to shoot the victims, and a 45-caliber handgun to take his own life. Moffatt said Sodini fired a total of 36 shots.

Moffatt said the gunman did not have a direct target in the shooting -- firing "multiple" weapons "indiscriminately," Moffatt said -- and did not say anything before unleashing a burst of bullets.

"I don't think anyone could have stopped him," Moffatt said. "He just had a lot of hatred in him and was hell-bent on committing this act."

Channel 11 News was able to find what is believed to be Sodini's blog on the Internet, where he detailed his plans for Tuesday. The blog also suggests Sodini had initially planned to carry out the shooting in January, but "chickened out."
