Race For Grace Draws Huge Turnout

NORTH HUNTINGDON TWP., Pa. —

Nearly 1,000 runners turned out for the “Race for Grace” on Saturday to honor the memory of Grace Ekis.

Ekis was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor in January 2007. She died at the age of 5 on Valentine’s Day 2008.

“When grace got sick, we found out pretty quickly there's not a lot that can be done for kids who are in this situation,” said Brian Ekis, Grace’s dad.

Grace’s spirit lives on in her parents, Tamara and Brian. They helped build a foundation that helps other families facing the same struggle with money for expenses and research.

“The idea of all this is to try to find something that can be done to help these kids and their families,” said Brian Ekis.

The race brought out more than twice the expected number.

Ashley Metz, race director, said, “We couldn't be happier. We're just really appreciative of all the support we've received from the community.”

“It’s Grace at work,” added her mother.
