Rape Suspect's Father Says Son 'Needs To Be Put Away'

Pittsburgh police arrested a man who is accused of raping an 11-year-old girl after forcing her into an abandoned house.

Police said the girl was walking home from a school bus stop around 4 p.m. on Thursday when Clyde Haidle Jr., 46, grabbed her along Ivondale Street in Greenfield.

Channel 11's Timyka Artist spoke with the victim's father on Friday.

"I'm devastated," he said. "It's really difficult as a parent to watch your child go through something like this. She's only 11 years old."

Channel 11’s Renee Kaminski sat down for an interview with the suspect’s father.

“I knew it was going to happen sooner or later. I knew it,” said Clyde Haidle Sr.

“He lived nothing but a life of trouble,” Haidle said. “He just don't seem like he's ever going to grow up and learn.”

When asked why his son would want to hurt a little girl, Haidle had no idea. “He’s sick,” he said. “There’s something wrong with him.”

“He just needs to be put away,” Haidle said.

A neighboring resident, Nina Kopa, heard the cries of the child.

“Some girl started running down the street yelling, 'Help me, I've been raped',” Kopa said. “We took her in, called 911.”

The girl told police the man approached her and started talking to her, then grabbed her by the neck and forced her into the abandoned house.

“I comforted her as much as I could until the cops came,” Kopa said. “I was the only female there, and I think she felt better with me being there.”

Haidle was found hiding under the floor boards of a nearby residence. Police had to hit Haidle with a Taser gun while apprehending him.

“He was found in the floorboards on the third floor under the carpet,” said Sgt. Brian Elledge of the Pittsburgh police. “And it was like a trapdoor where he was lying down.”

The girl was taken to Children's Hospital.

"We were actually out on the back patio tonight, and we hear all these helicopters going around the place," said neighbor Chelsea Ebco. "So we come out front, and our neighbors are all outside."

Haidle is charged with rape, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, and related crimes.

Three other people were arrested on charges of obstruction of justice, police said.
