Ravenstahl: Officers' Promotions Were Unacceptable

City Police Review Board To Discuss Matter

PITTSBURGH —

Mayor Luke Ravenstahl is now saying the promotions of three police officers with domestic abuse allegations is "unacceptable."

Ravenstahl made that clear after a one-hour meeting with police leaders Tuesday.

Ravenstahl said the procedures that exist for approving police promotions are "obsolete."

Now Ravenstahl’s staff and the police chief are going to be looking at ways to change those policies for the future.

Ravenstahl knew about the past involving George Trosky who was promoted from detective to commander.

He had been arrested for assaulting his then-wife and drunk driving.

But Ravenstahl said Police Chief Nate Harper never told him about Lt. Charles Rodriguez, charged with simple assault against his daughter -- or Sgt. Eugene Hlavac, involved in two police visits to his home after arguments with his girlfriend.

Ravenstahl left open the possibly of reversing the promotions.

The City Police Review Board is expected to discuss the matter Tuesday night.

Also, several women's groups will be meeting with the mayor Wednesday.
