Rescue Workers End Search For 'Parachutist' Near Route 28

SHALER, Pa. —

Shortly before 7:30 p.m. Saturday, several people called 911 to report a parachutist stuck in a tree near Route 28 in Shaler Township.

A man who claimed to be fishing near McCandless avenue in Lawrenceville said he saw the parachute fall into the woods between Millvale and Etna.

Fire fighters and police from surrounding jurisdictions searched the area with flashlights and heat sensors for hours.

Stat Medevac assisted the rescue effort with one of their helicopters.

By the end of the night, no one had been found. Police suspect that the callers were mistaken or deliberately staging a hoax.
