Review: A Day Out With Thomas The Train

We recently took our 3-year-old and 15-month-old to Strasburg, Pa., to see Thomas the Train. Every summer, fall, and winter, Thomas the Train visits Strasburg for children to have a “Day Out with Thomas.” This is a “family event that offers children and their grownups the opportunity to ride with classic storybook friend, Thomas the Tank Engine."

The entire day was wonderful. Everything from parking, to the train ride, to the hospitality of people, was far more than what I expected!!!

Here is why:

Everything was very well-organized inside the event. Depending on what time your train ride was scheduled for, this would dictate when you would stand in line to wait to ride Thomas. Our children never waited more than 10 minutes in line for something! There was lots of staff around to help answer questions and direct us, too.

The cost to ride Thomas was $18/ per person. That included admission into the park where Sir Topham Hatt was, little trains to ride, the conductor and lots of animated trains that looked like James, Percy and Thomas himself.

Each family or child had the opportunity to sit in front of Thomas to get a professional picture taken. I was very impressed, because each photographer was willing to take pictures with our individual cameras as well!! So, if we did not want to purchase their pictures, we would have one of our own!!

The train ride itself was about 20- 25 minutes long and it was the perfect amount of time to keep toddlers to stay in place without getting fidgety.

There was lots of Thomas the Train things to purchase. I was quite surprised to discover the prices at the event were the same as Target or Toys 'R Us!! We purchased items that could not be found in the stores around Pittsburgh, too!!

I thought that my son’s age, 3, was the perfect age to bring him to the event. We went with friends who had a 20-month-old, and he was too overtired for the event and wasn’t able to handle all the excitement.

In addition, my 15-month-old daughter was too little to realize what was going on. Strasburg, Pa., is approximately a four-hour drive from Pittsburgh, but I thought it was well worth the trip, and we might even go back in December when Santa rides the train with the kids!

If your child has an imagination and you are willing to engage in it, visiting Thomas is something that will be extremely special to your family!!!
