Roethlisberger's Attorney: 'No Sexual Assault Occurred'

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. —

The investigation continues Monday into sex assault allegations made against Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger.

A 20-year-old woman in Milledgeville, Ga., accused Roethlisberger of sexually assaulting her at a nightclub early Friday morning.

On Monday, Milledgeville police held a news conference on the allegations.

“Over the weekend, we continued to interview witnesses,” said Chief Woodrow W. Blue, Jr.

Blue also said that police have spoken with Roethlisberger’s attorney, and he’s in the process of making arrangements for police to speak with Roethlisberger and the individuals in his party Friday. Blue anticipates the interviews will take place in the next two or three days but didn't say where.

Roethlisberger has hired Ed Garland, a high-powered criminal defense attorney from Atlanta. He represented Baltimore Ravens star Ray Lewis, who was under investigation for his alleged involvement in a homicide decades ago.

Garland issued this statement Monday:

“The facts show that there was no criminal activity. No sexual assault occurred. We are cooperating with the investigation. Ben is completely innocent of any crime. The truth of the events should cause this investigation to end without a criminal charge. I will not go into details at this time but will in the future,” said Garland.

Police also said during the news conference Monday that they’re looking at Milledgeville businesses and videos they have but wouldn't elaborate.

Police added that they have been in contact with the accuser and she has legal representation.

Steelers President Art Rooney II released this statement on Monday:

“All of us in the Steelers family are concerned about the recent incident involving Ben Roethlisberger in Georgia. We cannot comment on any of the specifics until law enforcement’s investigation is concluded. Certainly, we will continue to closely monitor the situation,” Rooney said.

Channel 11's Rick Earle who is in Georgia said the woman accusing Roethlisberger of sexual assault is a sorority member from a local college near Milledgeville. Her sorority sisters declined to comment on the investigation.

As of Monday, no charges have been filed against Roethlisberger in the case.

Roethlisberger is currently being sued in civil court by Andrea McNulty, who claims the quarterback raped her in 2008 at a Lake Tahoe hotel. The Steelers star denies those allegations and has asked for counter-damages.
