Eileen McCabe was able to help police locate bank robbery suspect John McAleavey after she said she witnessed him rob the National City Bank on Banksville Road on Friday.
McCabe said she saw a man pull a mask over his face before running into the bank in the Banksville Plaza. That's when she called police.
When the man fled the scene, McCabe said she began to follow him.
"He (911) kept saying, 'The police are behind you, the police are behind you,'" said McCabe. "I didn't hear the police, but as soon as my car stopped, they were right there."
During the chase, a police cruiser attempting to stop the suspect flipped in the southbound lanes of Route 28. The officer driving that vehicle injured his left arm.
As the chase continued, with the suspect weaving in and out of rush hour traffic, police were able to lay a spike strip in the sport utility vehicle's path, but that didn't seem to do much to slow the driver down.
McAleavey was then cornered and forced to make a quick turn onto the 31st Street Bridge, where a number of officers were able to box the vehicle in and get the man out.
Multiple officers and dozens of police cruisers were on the bridge when the suspect was apprehended.
Police believe McAleavey was involved in the robbery of the National City Bank on Banksville Road. Meghan Jaeger, 21, of Ohio, was the passenger in McAleavey's vehicle. She was also taken into custody.
