Security Officials To Form Subcommittees To Address G-20 Issues

PITTSBURGH —

Law enforcement and security officials plan to form subcommittees to address specific security concerns when the G-20 economic summit comes to Pittsburgh Sept. 24-25.

Public safety officials from about 30 agencies decided that when they met for the first time Tuesday. Led by the Secret Service, which is in charge of security for the event, the officials gathered at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center where the summit will be held.

Pittsburgh police Chief Nate Harper has said he believes about 4,000 officers are needed for the event. The city has fewer than 900 police.

The subcommittees will focus on specific concerns, such as threats that could be mounted from the city's three rivers. That group will likely be led by Coast Guard officials, for example.
