South Side Conditions Lead To Hit-And-Run Accidents

People Become Victims Multiple Times

PITTSBURGH —

Police said the South Side ranks first in hit-and-runs with 399 last year.

That compares to 171 in Squirrel Hill and 89 in Bloomfield.

Police said tight parking, narrow streets and booming bar business in the area contributed to the high number.

Many people claim to have been the victim of multiple hit-and-runs.

Melanie Evankovich, of the South Side, told Channel 11 her car mirror gets whacked off at least once a month.

Evankovich said sometimes it costs a couple of dollars, but sometimes it costs a lot depending on how much of the mirror is hit.

South Side resident Peter Halapatz complained that he has had his mirror and glass broken so many times that his insurance went up so much, and now he just pays the bill himself.
