Tests Confirm WVU Student Died Of Meningitis

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. —

Tests confirm that a 19-year-old West Virginia University freshman from Virginia died of bacterial meningitis.

Chelsea Kanatus died March 2.

She had received the meningitis vaccination prior to the school year.

WVU hospitals spokeswoman Amy Johns said an infectious disease specialist tested the student's spinal fluid.

Health officials said they're confident they've identified everyone who had significant contact with Kanatus.

A total 40 people, in Morgantown and in Kanatus' hometown in Virginia, were treated with antibiotics as a precaution.
