City Councilwoman Natalia Rudiak today plans to introduce legislation to rename the T-ball field at Brookline Memorial Park in honor of Officer Stephen James Mayhle.

Mayhle, 29, lived in Brookline with his wife and two daughters. He and officers Eric G. Kelly, 41, and Paul Sciullo II, 36, were fatally shot April 4, 2009, while responding to a domestic disturbance in Stanton Heights. Police said the accused gunman, Richard Poplawski, 22, was wearing a bulletproof vest and ambushed the officers with a shotgun and AK-47 when they arrived.

"Mayhle's actions that day to ensure the safety of the people of the city of Pittsburgh shall stand as a steadfast reminder of the incredible dedication, and sacrifice, that our uniformed men and women carry out on a daily basis," the legislation says.

Last August, Dean's Field in Bloomfield was renamed the Paul J. Sciullo II Memorial Field. Other memorials have also been planned.
