Uniontown man asks for forgiveness during sentencing in girlfriend's slaying

UNIONTOWN, Pa. —

A Uniontown man who was just 16 when he accidentally shot his girlfriend was sentenced to six to 12 years in prison on Tuesday.

Ramal Chisler, who is now 18, was sentenced by a Fayette County judge after he pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and carrying a firearm.

Chisler said 17-year-old Tiffany Moody didn't like guns, so he was trying to dismantle the weapon and hide it when she arrived for a visit but accidentally shot her instead.

At his guilty plea earlier this month, Chisler apologized and explained that a bullet jammed in the weapon as he was trying to take it apart.

Tuesday Chisler spoke directly to Moody’s father from the stand and said he was sorry and asked for forgiveness.

District Attorney Jack Heneks Jr. said there was no animosity between Moody and Chisler who was "grossly negligent" in her death on Sept. 16, 2010.

Moody’s family members, most of which were overcome by tears inside the courtroom, said the judge’s decision doesn’t give them closure.

“I know that he’s sorry and that he didn’t mean to shoot her, but I just miss my sister so much and it drives me crazy that she’s not here,” Moody’s sister, Sally Moore, said.

Moody’s father, Leroy Moody, said he doesn’t think Chisler told the full story.

“I know a lot about guns and there’s no way he can convince me that it was an accident,” Moody said. “I think the only reason we agreed on a plea bargain is because I wanted him to take the stand and there’s no way we could make him get on the stand and tell us what happened. I thought we would get more closure out of it this way, but we didn’t.”

Moody hugged Chisler’s grandmother as she left the courtroom and said he has no resentment towards Chisler’s family.

“I just want him and his family to know that I’m sorry they lost a loved one, but mine’s never coming back,” Moody said.
