Water Service Restored After South Side Water Main Break

A 16-inch water main broke late Sunday night, flooding several homes on Pittsburgh's South Side, causing a road closure and forcing water service to be shut off in the area. Even UPMC South Side Hospital didn't have service. Water bottles were given to patients.

The break happened in the 2500 block of Sarah Street around 11:20 p.m., flooding a half dozen basements of homes. Some basements had water up to the first floor.

The sight outside on shut down Sarah Street was this -- Neighbors, including a man with his guitar, scrambled to get out of their homes, so their belongings were not damaged. Crews, while it was a holiday, moved as fast as they could to fix the problem.

About 40 customers lost water service. Those customers were not able to flush their toilets or wash dishes this Memorial Day holiday.

Some customers were without gas service and electricity as well for several hours.

Service was restored around 4 p.m. on Monday.
