An image circulating on Facebook showing Mars the same size as the moon is a hoax.
The hoax states that on Tuesday at 12:30 a.m., Mars will be so close to Earth that it will appear about the same size as the moon, and it will look like there are two moons in the night sky.
Meteorologist Jamie Simpson said the hoax first started circulating in 2003, and again in 2005 and 2007.
But even with Mars at its closest to earth, it’s still 34 million miles away, much further than the moon’s average distance from Earth at 238,000 miles away, he said. While Mars is much bigger than the moon,, it will still only be about 1/140th the size of the moon because of its distance from Earth, he said.
