Pittsburgh sex offender gets life in prison for 'third strike' offense

PITTSBURGH — A Pittsburgh sex offender has had three strikes and is never getting out of prison.

Sixty-three-year-old James Hamlett Jr. of Sheraden was sentenced to three concurrent life terms Thursday by Allegheny County Judge Jill Rangos. %

Hamlett had sex crime convictions in 2007 and 1986 before he was convicted of sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl.

The girl told police that Hamlett, a friend of her mother's, attacked her in his car after taking her to a Pittsburgh Pirates game in September.

District attorney's spokesman Mike Manko says Hamlett is the first county sex offender to receive a life sentence for a third-strike conviction.
