Police arrest man after series of break-ins at New Brighton restaurant

NEW BRIGHTON, Pa. — Police arrested a man who they believe is behind a series of break-ins at a New Brighton restaurant.

Officials said John Wellman was caught on camera looking at Main Street Deli, jumping out the store window, running and then fighting with police.

Kathy Weaver, the restaurant's, said her surveillance system caught all four of the break-ins over the last month. Police believe that Wellman was responsible for all the incidents.

Police said Wellman jumped out a window to get away from an officer who had his gun drawn while ordering him to the ground after Thursday’s break-in.

According to a criminal complaint, Wellman fought to get away and grabbed for the officer’s service revolver, causing it to go off twice.

Weaver showed Channel 11’s Amy Marcinkiewicz video from Jan. 9, which shows someone who police believe to be Wellman breaking into her store twice in less than two hours. He takes one cash register the first time and comes back a half-hour later for another register.

“I'm tired of it. The first time he got money, and then the other three attempts he made up nothing. I just don't understand,” Weaver said.

Wellman has a criminal record dating back to 2006, with charges including theft, operating a meth lab, and now aggravated assault on a police officer.
