Police: Man surrendered peacefully after holding woman, children hostage

PITTSBURGH — A woman and two children are safe after a hostage situation peacefully Friday morning in Pittsburgh’s Hazelwood neighborhood ended peacefully.

Police were dispatched to a home at the corner of Hazelwood Avenue and Monongahela Street just before 4:30 a.m. Officers said they found evidence of a struggle and shots fired at the home.

Police later learned a man, identified as Chonel Dixon, 41, had knocked on the door and forced his way inside when a man answered.

Dixon had a gun and demanded to see a woman who was in the home, police said. There was a dispute and two shots were fired.

A 3-year-old and 5-year-old were in the home at the time. Nobody was hurt.

The woman and two children drove to a home on Blair Street. The SWAT team was then called. Officers made contact with Dixon and said he surrendered peacefully.

He's charged with aggravated assault and burglary.
