Police: Mom assaults son, 10, abandons him on North Side

PITTSBURGH — A Pittsburgh woman is facing charges after police said she hit her 10-year-old son and abandoned him on the North Side.

According to a criminal complaint obtained by Channel 11 News, Ramona Gardener, 40, assaulted her son and walked away, leaving him alone Wednesday night at about 9:15 p.m.

The boy’s aunt, who picked him up, told police that he had bruises on his face and was not wearing shoes.

The criminal complaint said the boy told officers that he and his mother were sitting on a porch when she hit him repeatedly and knocked his glasses off his face.

He used his mother’s phone to call his aunt.

The criminal complaint said police received a call from neighbors shortly afterward about a disorderly woman on Jacksonia Street.

Police identified the woman as Gardener, whom officers said was barely coherent and smelled like alcohol.

She was arrested on several charges, including assault, and was being held at the Allegheny County jail.
