Police officer injured after responding to carjacking report

PITTSBURGH — Police spokeswoman Emily Schaffer said officers were called to the area on a report of a carjacking. They found a man, 30, who had been stabbed multiple times.

Police learned that the victim had multiple warrants for his arrest. Authorities handcuffed the man to the door of a car, but he broke off the handle and then hit a female officer in the face, officials said.

The officer was knocked to the ground and suffered a cut on the head.

Other officers tried to restrain the man. A Taser was used to shock him, but he continued to resist, Schaffer said.

A K-9 officer was needed to take the man into custody.

“They did (use a Taser on) him, and they also did deploy a K-9, so he does have a K-9 bite. He was actively resisting that K-9 and also fighting with the K-9,” Schaffer said.

The man was taken to the hospital in serious but stable condition. He has not yet been identified, but will be charged with aggravated assault.

The officer was taken to the hospital in good condition. She has since been released.

Police believe that two people might have been involved in the initial carjacking; however, they do not have a description of the perpetrators.
