Possible rattle snake spotted in Ben Avon park

BEN AVON, Pa. — Officials in Ben Avon issued an alert via their Facebook page saying that a possible timber rattlesnake was seen in an area park.

According to the Facebook post, the snake was reported along a walking trail at Ben Avon Park.

“Although they’re not found here in western Pennsylvania, it’s not to say that there’s one that could be out there,” said Henry Kacprzyik, from the Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium.

Kacprzyik said there’s a chance someone let a pet snake loose.

“A lot of times, people misidentify anyone of those copperheads or rattle snacks.  People tend to think ‘venomous snake’ when they see a snake,” said Kacprzyik.

Ben Avon officials advise any one visiting the park to, “avoid low lying brush and open crevices.”

If the snake is spotted, wildlife officials ask you to report the sighting to the Ohio Township Police Department.
