Post office, library and food bank flooded after heavy rain

UNIONTOWN, Pa. — The post office in Uniontown was one of several locations that were under water early Friday morning.

Photos sent to Channel 11 News show at least a few feet of water outside the building on East Fayette Street overnight and several inches of water inside the building.

Channel 11's Jennifer Tomazic reported that no mail was damaged and mail would be delivered on Friday. Twenty-six mail trucks from Pittsburgh were being brought in to replace ones that were destroyed in the flooding.

The food bank and library were also reported to be flooded when Redstone Creek spilled over its banks.

The food back said the damaged could not be measure, but hundreds of boxes were soaked from muddy water.

Jim Stark, executive director of the Fayette County Community Action said they’ve been flooded twice before, but not to this extent. The organization feeds about 4,000 Fayette County residents, giving food to 50 pantries.

“We had just finished packing boxes for senior citizens in our county,” said Stark.

The group is now hoping money and donations can help. Monetary donations can be accepted now, but the organization cannot receive donations for another week or two due to lack of storage space.

Marshal Manor, a senior high rise, was threatened by rising water.  Firefighters had the electricity and gas shut off while 70 residents remained in their homes. Several cars were under water.

“I woke up and the car (was) in the street, and I said, ‘We didn't park there,’” said Chelsea Vandivner.

Uniontown was one of several locations in Fayette County to experience flooding overnight.

Residents in Hopwood reported flooded yards and basements. There were also reports of flooding in North Union Township and South Union Township, where a few homes were evacuated.

The Uniontown post office is still closed.
