Proud to be from Pittsburgh: Breast Stroke for Breast Cancer

PITTSBURGH — A 14-year-old girl who loves swimming the breast stroke got an idea on how to raise money for cancer after her aunt was diagnosed.

Maddie Dorish’s aunt was diagnosed with breast cancer two years ago and she started a service project to help raise money to help women fight the disease.

"I thought breast stroke and breast cancer are kind of similar, so I came up with Breast Stroke for Breast Cancer," Dorish said.

Dorish and her family held a swimming clinic and sold hair ties and wrist bands last year, raising more than $5,000.

"It's really amazing. We're really proud of her," Maddie’s mother Mindy Dorish said.

This year’s event will be even more special since Maddie’s aunt lost her battle with breast cancer this past July. She was 44 years old.

"Maddie's response was, ‘I'm so glad we're doing this again,’" Mindy Dorish said.

A swimming clinic, a pure barre class and vendors will be held Saturday at the Mt. Lebanon indoor pool.

"I hope to get more swimmers and raise even more money this time," Maddie Dorish said.
