Dozens of people poured into the courtyard along Mt. Pleasant Road at Northview Heights Estates where Derrick Brown was shot, surrounding Tamarra Goodwine with love as they remembered her 16-year-old son.

“He was a good boy,” Goodwine said. “(He) just wanted to be a kid."

Police said Derrick was shot in the head late Sunday night and later died at a hospital.

"They don't understand what they put families through. You know, we're hurt,” Goodwine said.

Goodwine said he son’s father died five years ago to gun violence.

Derrick's grandmother said she’s now celebrating the birthday of her deceased son, while mourning the death of her grandson.

Goodwine said she’s now trying to figure out how to move forward without her eldest son.

"I got a 2-year-old who's never going to know his big brother. Only going to know him by looking at pictures and old videos,” she said.

Police have made no arrests in Derrick's death, and Goodwine had a stern message for the person responsible.

"Put these guns down. Put the guns down. Put the guns down,” she said. "Do the right thing. Turn yourself in."
