Rally held for National Day of Action for Immigrant Rights

Pittsburgh Latinos rallied Saturday, calling for an end to deportations and demanding Martin Hernandez be set free.

Hernandez, an undocumented immigrant, could be kicked out of the country, but supporters say he's a pillar in Pittsburgh's Brookline neighborhood.

“The whole future of the Latino community in Pittsburgh is really dependent on what happens with this case,” said Guillermo Perez of the Labor Council For Latin American Advancement. "If the signal is that undocumented people aren't welcome or supported in Pittsburgh, then the future of this city is not bright. I can tell you that right now."

The rally was part of a National Day Of Action for Immigrant Rights.

"We are a nation for all people regardless of religion, regardless of background, regardless of who you love.  We are here for everybody,” U.S. Sen. Van Hollen, D-Md., said at an immigration rally in Washington, D.C.

Government officials at the rally said they are standing by the nation’s undocumented immigrants and speakers denounced President-elect Donald Trump’s immigration policies.

Van Hollen said the American people won’t allow Trump to “bury the Statue of Liberty.”
