Man accused of crashing stolen car moments after police call off chase

PITTSBURGH — A man is facing charges after he allegedly crashed a stolen car moments after police ended their pursuit of him.

Authorities said Port Authority police attempted to stop Lorenzo Williams after he ran a red light at the intersection of Smithfield Street at Sixth Avenue in Pittsburgh. He fled officers, taking them to the mouth of the Fort Pitt Tunnel, where officers were told to end their chase.

Williams proceeded through the tunnel and ended up crashing in the outbound lanes near the Banksville Exit, police said. He attempted to run on foot but eventually laid down on the ground and was taken into custody.

According to the criminal complaint, Williams told officers he did not pull over because the vehicle was “hot,” or stolen.

Williams was taken to a hospital for treatment, released and then taken to jail.
