Restaurant reopens following repairs to 6-foot hole in wall created during rescue of Pitt student

PITTSBURGH — An Oakland restaurant had its grand reopening after repairing a hole that had to be made to rescue a University of Pittsburgh student who fell and got stuck between that building and another.

Qdoba Mexican Grill owner Chad Brooks had to close the restaurant while repairs were made to the 6 and 1/2-foot hole that was made to rescue Grant Birdsong, who was trying to jump from one Forbes Avenue roof to another.

"It was a bad situation but we've tried to make the best of it. Tried to take a lighthearted approach to it," Brooks said.

Closing during one of the most important times of the year caused a financial setback after having to close for 60 days, said Brooks.

"We've made it work. It’s been a challenge," he said.

In honor of their reopening, the restaurant is offering a special “Knock out the Wall” taco.
