S. Butler school considers random drug testing for students in extracurricular activities

Knoch High School upperclassmen who participate in extracurricular activities may soon have random drug tests.

The school has its problems like any other district, but is trying to be proactive to combat drug abuse among its students.

South Butler School District Superintendent David Zupsic said he spoke extensively with officials at Seneca Valley and Mars school districts, which have had the program in place for years.

“The point of the policy is about support for the kids and we're not here to manage the kids and we're here to identify students who are using and get them help," Zupsic said.

High school students who participate in extracurricular activities or parks on campus would have to submit to random drug testing by the school. The rule would apply for all sports, clubs, the band or to get a parking pass.

The drug testing proposal is a work in progress. It's something many other school districts in the state do, but Zupsic said he wants to get input from the board and parents before moving forward and will open up the discussion to them.

Zupsic said if everything goes as planned, the policy could go into effect next year.
