Scouts fall off cliff during hike, one dead

CORVALLIS, Ore. — An Oregon community is mourning Nolan Grant Henderson, a 16-year-old boy who died in a hiking accident. Another teenager who was with him was also hurt.

Scout executive Scott Impecoven said in a statement: "Our scouting family is going through a painful time. We are sad to confirm the death of one of our youth members following a hiking-related incident. We would like to extend our deepest condolences to the victim's family, and we will support them in any way that we can. Please join us in keeping all those affected in your thoughts and prayers."

Klamath County Sheriff Chris Kaber told KEZI that on Saturday, Henderson and the other boy were climbing a cliff near Middle Rosary Lake.  Henderson grabbed a handhold that gave way, and he fell.

Initial reports said the boys were seriously injured in a fall from a peak near the lake. An Army National Guard helicopter and medical team was dispatched. Henderson was apparently already dead when emergency responders arrived. The team rescued the injured teenager, whose name has not been released at this time.

"It's been difficult for everyone involved. We reached out to the Lane County Sheriff's Office yesterday. They made notifications to the family. I understand that was difficult. I'm sure there's quite a few families in the scout troop devastated by this event," said Kaber.

An official with the Boy Scouts of America in Eugene said the other teen who fell has minor injuries but is expected to make a full recovery.
